Sales tax in Connecticut

Current law (through June 30, 2027)

  • Rare or antique coinsExempt from Connecticut sales tax only if the total transaction is $1,000 or more.
  • Gold or silver bullionExempt if the transaction is $1,000 or more.
  • Gold or silver legal tender traded for its precious metal value (such as American Gold Eagles or Canadian Maple Leafs) – Exempt if the transaction is $1,000 or more.
  • Transactions under $1,000 generally do not qualify for the exemption and are subject to Connecticut's 6.35% sales tax.

Change effective July 1, 2027

Connecticut has enacted a law that will:

  • Eliminate the $1,000 minimum purchase requirement.
  • Extend the exemption to include palladium bullion and platinum.
  • Limit the bullion exemption to gold and silver bullion that is at least 90% pure.

  • $750 Morgan Dollar collection6.35% sales tax applies (under current law).
  • $2,500 Morgan Dollar collectionSales tax exempt.
