Sales tax in Mississippi

In Mississippi, the sales tax on coins, currency, and bullion is 0% (exempt) when the items meet the state's definition of coins, currency, or bullion. The exemption became effective July 1, 2023.

The exemption covers:

  • Coins and currency made of gold, silver, other metals, or paper that were or are used as a medium of exchange, security, or commodity by a government, and are sold based on their intrinsic value or collectible value.
  • Bullion (gold, silver, platinum, or palladium bars, ingots, or coins) sold based on precious-metal value.

A few important notes for coin shows:

  • ✅ U.S. coins, world coins, paper money, and precious-metal bullion generally qualify.
  • ✅ Dealer sales at Mississippi coin shows should generally be sales-tax exempt if the items meet the statutory definition.
  • ❌ Coins/currency incorporated into jewelry are excluded.
  • Other collectibles or merchandise (supplies, accessories, books, displays, etc.) may still be taxable because Mississippi's normal retail sales tax rate is 7% on tangible personal property unless exempted.
