In Oklahoma, the sales tax treatment of coins and currency depends on what you are selling:
๐ช Bullion / Precious Metal Coins
Sales tax: 0% (exempt) for qualifying bullion transactions. Oklahoma exempts sales of gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and other bullion items such as coins and bars when they are sold based on their precious metal value or as an investment. This includes qualifying bullion coins, rounds, bars, ingots, blanks, and medallions.
Examples generally exempt:
- American Gold Eagles
- American Silver Eagles
- Gold and silver bars
- Investment-grade rounds
- Foreign bullion coins sold for metal value
๐ต Collectible Coins (Numismatic Coins)
Sales tax may apply. Coins sold primarily for their collectible/numismatic value (rather than metal value) can be treated as taxable tangible personal property.
Examples that may be taxable:
- Rare U.S. coins
- Certified graded coins (PCGS/NGC) sold for collector value
- Proof sets
- Commemorative coins sold above face value because of collectibility
๐ Paper Currency
Taxable. Oklahoma's bullion exemption specifically excludes paper currency.
