Sales tax in Vermont

In Vermont, the sales tax treatment of coins and currency depends on the type of item:

  • General sales tax rate: Vermont has a 6% state sales tax on taxable retail sales.
  • Collectible coins, paper currency, tokens, and numismatic items: Generally, these are subject to the 6% sales tax because they are considered taxable tangible personal property.
  • Precious metal bullion and certain coins: Vermont has historically taxed these as well, but legislation has been introduced to exempt precious metal bullion or coins beginning July 1, 2026. The proposed exemption covers gold/silver items where value is primarily based on precious metal content, including monetized bullion and qualifying coins.
