Offered here is an interesting vintage merchant trade token issued by G. McCauley of Shaw, West Virginia. This brass token was redeemable for 5 cents in merchandise, representing a fascinating piece of local commercial history from the era when businesses commonly issued their own tokens for use in stores, company towns, and other establishments.
The obverse is marked “A. G. McCAULEY / SHAW / W.VA.” surrounded by a raised beaded border. The reverse features a large 5 within a decorative wreath with the inscription “GOOD FOR 5¢ IN MERCHANDISE.”
