Description

1865 Three-Cent Nickel – Civil War Era U.S. Coin

Offered here is an 1865 Three-Cent Nickel, an interesting 19th-century U.S. coin from the first year of the nickel three-cent series. Introduced during the final year of the Civil War, the denomination was created in part to help restore small-denomination coinage to everyday circulation.

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet, surrounded by the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” with the date 1865 below. The reverse displays the Roman numeral III, representing three cents, surrounded by a decorative wreath.

This example is in circulated condition, showing noticeable wear across Liberty's portrait and the reverse design. The date remains clearly visible, and the major design elements and lettering are readily identifiable. Surface marks, scratches and other signs of circulation are present.
